A short day session at Tucker's - 3rd July 2016

I got to Tucker's Pond in Faringdon, Oxfordshire at about 730am on Sunday morning. I always have I good look around before I start fishing, location is the most important thing in any type Carp Fishing but more so in short day sessions as the rods have less time in the water so you want to make it count. I didn't see much when I walked round the lake the first time, although I could just make out some carp lying on top of the weed by the snags and a few drifting past the lily pads. I was quick to to get rods out where i saw some fish as I wanted to make the most of the early morning as this can be one of the best bite times. One rod went in between two weed beds and the other went just off the lily pads. I use a very simple but reliable rig for 90% of my fishing, A combi rig made out of a soft coated braid, I have about a centimetre of stripped braid before the hook which I place a BB shot or some putty on which counterbalances the pop up I use. I prefer a short hair on my rigs so the hookbait is touching the curve of the hook because I feel it works better with a pop up close to the lake bed and that the fish can't take the bait without the hook. I mentioned before I use small pop ups with my rigs, usually a 10-12mm. I feel this gives me an edge as most people use 15-18mm baits which I think fish can spook away from, plus its something the fish rarely see. At about 930am I had a dropback on my rod fished close to the lily pad which equated into a screaming take and a massive eruption on the surface. The fish put up a great scrap for its size, trying to get into weed, lilys and snags but I managed to glide him into my net. He was a scale perfect common which went 10lb 8oz on the scales. I was well chuffed to get him as the lake hasn't been fishing well and I fish that had been caught recently were on the surface so it felt good to get one on the bottom.  I got the rig back out as soon as I could to maximize bite time as the rod melted off soon after I returned the last fish, but unfortunately I lost it soon after picking up the rod which has only happen a handful of times while using that rig, Action died soon after that and by lunch time it was time to pack up and go.
